MERRY CHRISTMAS!


For years, Aunt Pearl asked me to make a recording of some nice piano music, especially Christmas carols. 

In those days, it was a cassette recording she was looking for.  I always told her I would make the

recording when I had some time.  Sadly, I never did make a recording for her, and sadly now it's

too late for me to fulfill her request.

 

Aunt Pearl has been in my thoughts this year - particularly when it comes to things that I have wanted

to accomplish in my life.  This has been a year of losses for many, and that always brings the

opportunity for each of us to re-prioritize our lives and make time for things that are important - things

we might have been putting off until we have more time.

 

I have taken time this year to record two pieces of music I hope you will enjoy. 

 

"O Come, All Ye Faithful" is my interpretation of my favourite Christmas carol that I took a few liberties with.


"Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" is a beautiful French carol that has been so wonderfully arranged by Sally DeFord.

During this special time of year, no matter who you worship or what event you celebrate, I wish you the majesty

of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and the melody and harmony of Sally DeFord.  May 2010 be a year where you

accomplish those important things that you have been meaning to do - before it's too late!

Adeste Fideles is the name of a hymn tune attributed to John Francis Wade
and the first line of the Latin text for which the tune was written. The text itself
has unclear beginnings, and may have been written in the 13th century, though
it has been concluded that Wade was probably the author, and it has been
interpreted as a Jacobite birth ode to Bonnie Prince Charlie.

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is a Christmas carol which originated
from the Provence region of France in the 16th century. The song is
unique among Christmas carols in that it is in 3 8 time.

The carol was first published in 1553 in France, and was subsequently
translated into English in the 18th century. The song was originally not
a song to be sung at  Christmas, but rather dance music for French nobility.

The carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeanette and Isabella, who go to
milk their cows in a stable in Bethlehem, only to find the baby Jesus sleeping
in the manger. The two girls run to town to tell the village of the coming of
Christ and the townspeople come with their own torches to view the sight for
themselves.  However, they have to keep their voices down so little Jesus can
enjoy his dreams.  To this day in the Provence region, children dress up as
shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass
on Christmas Eve, while singing the carol.

Christ is born. Tell the folk of the village
Jesus is born and Mary's calling.
Ah! Ah! beautiful is the Mother!
Ah! Ah! beautiful is her son!

It is wrong when the Baby is sleeping,

Silence, now as you gather around,
Lest your noise should waken Jesus.
Hush! Hush! see how the Baby slumbers;
Hush! Hush! see how the Baby sleeps!

Softly now unto the stable,
Softly for a moment come!
Look and see how charming is Jesus,
Look at him there, His cheeks are rosy!
Hush! Hush! see how the Child is sleeping;
Hush! Hush! see how he smiles in dreams!
